The Renaissance castle is the place of birth of the lawyer and mining engineer Friedrich von Hardenberg who gave himself the pseudonym “Novalis” for his poetic works. Together with Tieck and the Schlegel brothers Novalis, who wrote e.g. “Hymnen an die Nacht” and “Heinrich von Ofterdingen” is the most important representative of the Early Romanticism.
The castle, being prevented from demolition by a citizens` initiative in 1988 is now the home of a museum, an exploration site on Early Romanticism and the MuseumAkademie Novalis. The castle´s garden with its lime tree avenue and the so-called Blauen Garten invites you equally to stroll around through the “Märchenrosenterrasse”.
Overwiederstedt Castle is the home of the International Novalis Gesellschaft e.V. and of the foundation “Wege wagen mit Novalis” (“Explore new ways with Novalis”) and it is a national important cultural heritage site (KGO).

Concentration camp outpost memorial Wansleben
Museums, Exhibitions Camp & Arts The association for the historical reappraisal of the Nazi tyranny Mansfelder Land/Salzbergwerk Neumansfeld / Georgi e.V. has the objective to save the existing outposts of the industrial memorial Neumansfeld that was used as a labour camp for the arms industry from decay. Here, a memorial was established to raise awareness of the abuse of the mine during the Nazi tyranny. At the same time a meeting point was created to discuss today´s questions and problems and to search for answers.
From March 1944 to April 1945 the outpost Wansleben existed near the lake of the concentration camp Buchenwald. Some of the underground dismantling chambers of the potash mining shafts “Georgi” und “Neumansfeld” were used as production sites for military equipment. The association established a memorial and meeting site within the renovated winding machines` house. In these rooms one can visit the permanent exhibition regarding the history of the outpost. -
