Our Biosphere Reserve, located at the southern part of the Harz, covers an area of around 30.034 hectare. Visitors will be greeted by a broad variety of landscapes, geologic rarities and a manifold flora and fauna. On many locations, cultural and historic characteristics are witnesses of the life and the work activities of the human beings in this region, e.g. of the mining tradition, dating back more than 1000 years.
The hills of the Harz with all their faces are a holiday paradise for young and old alike, being well-known within Germany and abroad. However, the Karst landscape in the southern part of the Harz, located directly upstream of these old mountains, is stills an insiders´ tip for tourists. This region offers everything that hiking vacationers, nature lovers, families or those interested in art or history dream of for spending the most beautiful weeks of the year. And all these attractions are in one area, making even only a weekend there to a colorful and exiting event in every season of the year.
In spring time visitors can enjoy endless carpets of anemones, the fresh green of the beech tree forests and the flowering fruit trees. Wherever you look at, you won´t get enough of this view. Summer times invites you for hiking or biking through little old mining hills, being taken back by nature step by step, and fields full of corn flowers and red poppy in the glaring sunlight. If it is getting too hot there´s always the possibility to escape into the cool forests where holes and dolines tell about the secrets of the Karst. Red and golden leaves in autumn, a sleigh ride through the enchanted hills in the winter – romantic times everywhere and in every season!
