Millions of rose blossoms greet the visitors in Sangerhausen, the more than 1000 years-old city of mining and roses in the Südharz. Located here is the largest rose collection in the world, the Europa-Rosarium. More than 8.600 different cultivars and species surprise the visitors every year with their variety of forms, colors and perfumes.
The Europa-Rosarium is a gene bank, a living museum, impressively showing the roses´ development from the wild rose to the modern rose. At the same time, the Europa-Rosarium is a place of reflection. Once you discovered the magic of millions of roses, you will return to this place again and again.
The history of the Rosarium
Proposed by the society for improvement in 1897 the city park was extended up to the Röhrgraben. At the same time, the Verein Deutscher Rosenfreunde wanted to create a garden for roses. Sangerhausen applied for this creation and was awarded the contract. Peter Lampert, Albert Hoffmann, Professor Ewald Gnau and the landscaping architect, Doerr, created the Rosarium between the little lakes and the Röhrgraben, being opened to the public in 1903.
In 1914, the area was expanded. Thanks to Max Vogel who died in 1949, the roses´ collection grew. Between 1935 and 1943 the central department of the research of roses, being part of the Rosarium, holds its seat there.
Today the area of the Rosarium covers about 13 hectare, with additional areas. Currently around 8600 species of roses as well as 350 rare woody plants grow in the Rosarium. In 1993 it received its current name, “Europa-Rosarium”.
In 2003 on the occasion of the 100-year anniversary, a new main entrance with a shop, restaurant and an information center “Rose” was built. From here, a main axis planted with climbing roses, bed roses and shrubs leads directly to the roundabout.
In the north of the main axis two theme gardens have been created. The roundabout offers a great view to the first section of the sea of roses and the old part of the Rosarium. There are many culturally interesting events taking place in the Rosarium, e.g. the mining and roses´ event during the last weekend of June with many stars and a broad variety of music and entertainment program for young and old alike, or the Sangerhäuser Sparkassen Klassik Night and the Sangerhäuser Rosenball, to name only a few. Another highlight is the “Night of the 1000 lights” at the time of the second flowering of the roses, on the second Saturday in August.
